Judges Award

  • Carrie Cochran, Cincinnati Enquirer : “EMINAF School”
A seventh-grade class resumes at EMINAF school in the Port-au-Prince neighborhood of Fontamra seven weeks after the earthquake, when the vast majority of the schools in Haiti remain closed. As there is no expected date for their re-opening, The Restavek Foundation has taken on the task of getting schools running again. The foundation had engineers check this school for structural stability, is paying the teachers' and administrators' salaries, as well as paying for lunch for students. The foundation, which is centered on erradicating childhood slavery in Haiti, has expanded its work into earthquake relief efforts, such as feeding people in certain communities that aid has not reached, as well as helping to open schools.cbguk
