This could be one of the largest gatherings of journalists in Kentucky history with the Kentucky News Photographers Association, the Kentucky Press Association and the Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association all come together in Lexington at the Embassy Suites for one big convention. KNPA members will be meeting Friday and Saturday, January 20-21; KPA’s portion of the schedule is Thursday and Friday, January 19-20;  and KIPA members will be with KPA on Friday, January 20, then having its Awards Brunch on Saturday, January 21.

The KNPA will hold it’s annual POY Contest judging on Friday, January 20, 2012, which is open to the public from 10:30 a.m. until about 10 p.m. Both Still and TV contests will be judged.

The 2012 KNPA Educational Seminar will be help Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. with eight speakers/presenters that are recognized as industry leaders. Canon and Nikon vendors will be set up to let you look, touch and drool over some of their latest cameras, lenses and accessories.

The Embassy Suites Lexington is located ate 1801 Newtown Pike  Lexington, KY 40511   (859) 455-5000. When you call to make reservations, tell them you are with the KNPA/KPA/KIPA event to get the discounted rate.

The KNPA Still and TV Contest info will be posted in about 7 days. So dust of that hard drive and dig out those tapes and start compiling your entry. Visit www.knpa.org after Dec. 5 for contest rules, entry forms, seminar registration and KNPA forms.

As there is no expected date for their re-opening, The Restavek Foundation has taken on the task of getting schools running again. The foundation had engineers check this school for structural stability, is paying the teachers' and administrators' salaries, as well as paying for lunch for students. The foundation, which is centered on erradicating childhood slavery in Haiti, has expanded its work into earthquake relief efforts, such as feeding people in certain communities that aid has not reached, as well as helping to open schools.cbguk

A bald eagle came in for a landing in a tree on the Lakeside Golf Course. For the first time in more than a hundred years, experts say a bald eagle has been spotted in Lexington. The eagle was returning to the tree where he had been eating a seagull from the nearby Jacobson Park Lake.

My Blessings -- Viviana Herrera is a 25-year-old single mother in Bowling Green, Ky., who immigrated from Medellin, Columbia six years ago with her mother and seven other brothers and sisters. Before moving out of Columbia, Herrera's fiancŽ was killed when she was only 16 years old and pregnant with Jackeline. Her father was a successful lawyer and was also killed, forcing her and her family to flee, eventually coming to the United States. Viviana remains one of the main breadwinners for the family as she raises her kids in the same four-bedroom apartment as her mother and five other brothers and sisters.
