Still Contest Rules
*****DEADLINE IS MIDNIGHT JANUARY 14, 2012*****
All images must have been created between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011. The Picture Story categories are an exception, and an entry may contain some images from previous years. No image previously entered in the seminar competition may be entered again. Contestants may enter single image categories without entering the POY competition. Also, images from multiple image categories may be entered in single image categories.
The 2012 KNPA seminar competition will be divided into two divisions.
-
Professional Division
The professional division is open to photographers who live and or work in the state of Kentucky, who accept payment for photography services by way of salary or on a contractual basis, and who are not currently enrolled in high school or college.
-
Student Division
The student division is open to photographers who are currently enrolled in high school and colleges or universities at the time of the judging in the state of Kentucky. A contestant who is enrolled in a graduate program after working as a professional photographer has the choice of entering either the professional or student division. You are ineligible for the Student contest once you have completed one year or more of full time professional experience or its equivalent. This includes internships if the time spent totals 12 months or more.
Judging for all individual, multiple-picture, and POY categories will be open to the public and the results will be available immediately. Judges will award first, second, and third place awards in single image, multiple image categories and choose a Pro, Student and Sports POY and runner-up. Judges retain the right to award up to two images, honorable mention, where they see fit. Judges may not move an image that they feel has been entered in the incorrect category. Judges may combine categories that they decide do not have enough entries.
Images do not have to be published to be eligible for judging. You do not have to attend the seminar to enter. The contest is open to current KNPA members. KNPA members are defined as those who have paid their dues and work in Kentucky.
Professional or student contestants may submit a maximum of 15 entries total in single, and multiple image categories. Categories requiring multiple images photo essay, news picture story, etc. count as one entry. Entries for Photographer of the Year do not count towards the 15 entry quota. Submissions for the Student and Professional POY should not exceed 10. They can be a combination of any single or multiple image category. Likewise the Sports POY entries should not exceed 10. Preparing Your Images
1. Choose a unique five-letter photographer code, such as “bdwrz” (don’t use that code). Make sure it doesn’t spell a word and doesn’t reflect your name. You may reuse the code from another contest, such as from a previous year’s KNPA contest or from the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar.
2. Create a folder with your photographer code.
3. Inside that folder, create folders for singles and POY
4. Place your images into these folders. They should be JPEG files, no bigger than 1500 pixels on the longest side, and the file should be less than 700KB. In Photoshop, use a JPEG compression level of 9 or less.
5. Each image must contain complete captions following AP Style or that of the publication for which they were prepared. The caption should not contain the photographer’s name. The first image in a story entry should contain a synopsis for the story.
6. Within each folder, name the files with the category number, your photographer code, and a two-digit submission number. For example:
00bdwrz01
Where:
00 = category code
bdwrz = photographer’s code
01 = file number
Multiple image category entries should be placed inside a folder named with category code, photographer code, and submission entry number and delimiter letter. Nomenclature for Multiple Image Category is as follows:
