We subscribe to the NPPA code of ethics with respect to manipulation of photos. As a result, the judging panel or members of the board may disqualify any images that do not meet these ethical standards.

The 2019 KNPA Still Contest has two divisions.


Professional Division

  • The professional division is open to KNPA members who live and or work in the state of Kentucky, who accept payment for photography services by way of salary or on a contractual basis, and who are not currently enrolled in high school or college. Become a member now by clicking HERE.

Student Division

  • The student division is open to KNPA members who are currently enrolled in high school and colleges or universities at the time of the judging in the state of Kentucky. If you graduated in December you may still enter the student division. If you are on an internship and have credits left to graduate you may enter the student division. Competition for the still contest is comprised of a; Single and Multiple Image category judging, Photographer of the Year, Sports POY*, a Judges Award and Best in Show.

*At this time Sports Photographer of the Year is for Professionals only


The total number of entries for each contestant from the Single and Multiple Image Categories is 15

Single Image Categories

Contestants wishing to be considered for the single image category awards should place all photos into the corresponding category folders of their Dropbox folder.

YOUR ENTRIES - Will be displayed via projector for the judges size them 2000 pixels on the long side @ 100 dpi.

  • 01 Spot News - A single image of an unscheduled event for which no advance planning was possible.

  • 02 General News - A single image of a scheduled or organized event for which advance planning was possible.

  • 03 Feature - A single image of a found situation with strong human interest; a fresh view of an everyday scene.

  • 04 Sports Action - A single image showcasing action of a game or athletic event.

  • 05 Sports Feature - A single image that does not include action but has a strong human interest and shows a fresh view of the event.

  • 06 Portrait / Personality - A single image that captures an aspect of the subject’s character.

  • 07 Pictorial - A single image that exploits the graphic, aesthetic or compositional qualities of the subject.

When preparing your images for submission:

  • Remove your name from the image description/caption field. 

  • If you wish add an image title to the image. In Photo Mechanic it would go in the “Title/Object” field and in the “Document Title” field in Photoshop

  • Add the category to the “Keywords:” field you are entering with the division at the end. 

    • For example if you are entering the spot news category as a professional you would put, 01_PRO in the “Keywords:” field.


Multiple Image Categories

Contestants wishing to be considered for the multiple image category awards should place all the photos in their entry into the corresponding category folders of their Dropbox folder.

YOUR ENTRIES - Will be displayed via projector for the judges size them 2000 pixels on the long side @ 100 dpi.

  • Do not have to be shot in Kentucky.

  • Do not have to be published to be considered for competition.

  • All images must have been created between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018.*

*The story/essay and multimedia categories are exceptions to this rule. Stills and video created during a previous year that contribute to a entry that has not been entered in a prior year’s contest can be submitted.

  • 08 News Picture Story/Essay - A collection of photos with a single theme that fits the description of the Spot News or General News category. Up to 10 images.

  • 09 Feature Picture Story/Essay - A collection of photos with a single theme that fits the description of the Feature category. Up to 10 images.

  • 10 Sports Picture Story/Essay - A collection of photos with a single theme that fits the description of the Sports Action or Sports Feature category. Up to 10 images.

  • 11 Weeks Work - A collection of photos from a 7 consecutive day period that fit the description of any single image category. Up to 5 images. 1 entry per contestant.

  • 12 Multimedia (8 Hours) - A piece produced within 8 hours, that may consist of still photos, and audio or video (must contain at least 2 of the 3; photo, audio, video) and requires no user interaction other than start/stop. 1 entry per contestant.

  • 13 Multimedia (Unlimited) - A piece produced over 8 hours, that may consist of still photos, and audio or video (must contain at least 2 of the 3; photo, audio, video) and requires no user interaction other than start/stop. 1 entry per contestant.

When preparing your images for submission:

  • Remove your name from the image caption/description. 

  • If you wish add an image title to the image. In Photo Mechanic it would go in the “Title/Object” field and in the “Document Title” field in Photoshop

Photographer of the Year (Student and Professional)

Contestants wishing to be considered for the POY awards should place all the entries in their corresponding POY Dropbox folder.

YOUR ENTRIES - Will be displayed via projector for the judges size them 2000 pixels on the long side @ 100 dpi.

  • Do not have to be shot in Kentucky.

  • Do not have to be published to be considered for competition.

  • All images must have been created between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018.*

*The story/essay and multimedia categories are exceptions to this rule. Images made in a previous year that contribute to a picture story that have not been entered in a prior year’s contest can be submitted.

Submissions for the Student and Professional POY should not exceed 10.

Each portfolio MUST include an entry from one multiple picture category (News Picture StoryFeature Picture StorySports Picture Story, Multimedia) and from one news category (Spot NewsGeneral NewsNews Picture Story.)

When preparing your images for submission:

  • Remove your name from the image caption/description. 

  • If you wish add an image title to the image. In Photo Mechanic it would go in the “Title/Object” field and in the “Document Title” field in Photoshop

  • Multiple Image categories count as 1 entry.

  • If you wish to enter multimedia in your POY entry make a text document with the filename of the multimedia entry and put in the POY folder.

  • Name your files such that when they are displayed by filename they are in the order you want them. 

    • For the filenames in the POY entries you may use your photographer code, the category number and a letter to indicate the sequence, POY_ABCDEa, POY_ABCDEb, POY_ABCDEc, etc.


Sports Photographer of the Year (Professionals Only)

Contestants wishing to be considered for the SPOY awards should place all the entries in their corresponding POY Dropbox folder.

  • Do not have to be shot in Kentucky.

JUDGES AWARD

  • This award is chosen from all first place entries from all categories.

BEST IN SHOW

  • This award will be given by the judges in memory of renowned Associated Press Photographer Ed Reinke. This award is at the discretion of the judges and can come from any entry.
